Description
Students will connect the development of sandy beaches with their inhabitants. Beaches provide not only habitats, but resources for food, construction, military operations, recreational, commercial, and residential opportunities. Students will recognize the importance of estuaries as the ocean’s nursery and learn the characteristics of different estuaries in various geographical locations. Preservation and restoration of these two ecosystems is a major environmental concern. Students should be able to identify by name some of the marine reptiles and birds found in close association with beaches. This unit will also explore the characteristics of beaches, waves and the concerns of coastal erosion and engineering.
