This course is designed for the student who has both keyboarding and formatting skills. For years office procedures classes were limited to a number of “in-basket” simulations and numerous texts that talked about the world of business. In this office procedures simulation, students take part in a workflow simulation. Each department depends on the work that other departments must complete to efficiently run the company. Students progress from competing for available positions through an interview and employment-testing procedure to a hands-on simulation in which they may be part of the support personnel during one rotation and a manager or department head in another. Departments involve the students with specialized work tasks such as accounting, shipping, graphics, and sales. Students take on a sense of responsibility because they know that if they don’t do their job, they are hampering the work of others. It becomes more realistic, more relevant, and more fun. “Employees” interact with each other and with those assigned to the “outside world,” such as retail stores, banks, utilities, and apartment complexes. The simulation becomes more than a set of prescribed activities: Students experience a “slice of life” as they open and manage personal bank accounts, set up an apartment, buy groceries and other necessities, pay bills, and file tax returns. Tisdale Enterprises is an experience that shows students how to open the door not only to the world of business, but to the world of domestic life as well.
