Elementary Music: Level 1 is a course that focuses on the teaching the fundamental elements of music in a way that is accessible for both the student and the teacher. This course builds upon the students’ kindergarten music experience by using themes that they will have explored in kindergarten, but building the skill sets within those themes to a first grade level. The course begins with lessons that explore the very nature of sound and how it is produced. In the unit The Planets, students will make connections between the solar system and Gustav Holst’s musical composition. Students will also begin exploring classical music through the timeless compositions of Camille Saint-Saens (Carnival of the Animals),Sergei Prokofiev (Peter and the Wolf), Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (Flight of the Bumblebee), and Modest Mussorgsky (Pictures at an Exhibition). Included in the course is a culminating musical performance, which contains vocal and instrumental parts, speaking parts, and costuming and staging suggestions. The lessons in this course are aligned with state and national standards in music education. The goal of this course is to help young students become knowledgeable consumers and appreciators of music, and to give teachers resources to facilitate this goal.
