Unit 1, Class Expectations: One of the most important steps towards establishing a cohesive, mutually supportive classroom is to establish clear goals and expectations among the students and the teacher. Each person in the class must understand the specific roles they will play and the methods by which they can evaluate the effectiveness of their performance. The students must also understand the level of rigor that you will expect of them.
In this lesson, there are two levels of expectations. The behavioral and procedural level will include the social rules of the classroom and the procedural points of preparation, accountability etc. The second level will deal with the “level of discourse” in the classroom. Bloom’s taxonomy provides an excellent framework to change the expectations of the students with respect to the intellectual expectations. In some cases, this discussion is going to be a real eye opener for the student.
Unit 2 Introduction to Data: This chapter introduces the students to the many uses of statistics in the sciences, politics, medicine, and other fields. It attempts to connect the career choices that the students are making and the uses of statistics within that field.
The second part of the chapter starts the analysis of data by introducing some new vocabulary. The concept of scale and the types of data will be important later as they will determine which techniques will be available in specific situations.
