Unit 4 – Constellations (Total 19 days, 303 pages): $30

$30.00

This unit will introduce the student to constellations, asterisms, light pollution, and the celestial sphere.  The celestial sphere is the set of coordinate systems used to map the position of stars and planets in the sky.

Motivation: One of the primary reasons students take astronomy is to learn about the constellations.  This unit builds constellation learning into the scientific process of observations and also connects many interdisciplinary topics such as geometry.  Students will be constructing celestial spheres during the unit, and if you build the large 5-meter dome, it will be very exciting for the students to participate.

Topics include Constellations and star map, using a Planisphere, Stellarium Simulation: Ecliptic and Equator, Common Asterisms, Light pollution, Estimating magnitudes, Build a Planetarium, Factor Label Conversions, RA and Dec, Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds, Sky Coordinates.
