Adavanced Language is a college-level course that focuses on the study of rhetoric, the art of speaking and writing persuasively. Through the study of both classical and contemporary texts, students learn to identify and construct successful arguments, arguments that attempt to persuade the reader to take action by establishing trust (ethos), pity (pathos), or logical acceptance (logos). Students in the course will learn to recognize language patterns and fallacies in order to understand the effects these have on a reader. By applying their rhetorical skills to contemporary issues, AP students will become “citizens of the world,” capable of holding well-informed, critical discussions on a variety of issues at the state, national, and global level. The successful student will be prepared to take the annual AP language exam administered by the College Board in May.
